The Sustainability Graduate Program aims to train professionals so that they become capable of inserting the necessary actions to the implementation of sustainability principles in the activities that refer to the use of natural resources by current societies.
Regardless of the basic training undergone by the students who will join the Program, it is intended to enable her to insert sustainability in the activities she will develop. This insertion will have two main approaches, conceptual and theoretical, which will deal with a new way of thinking about the use of resources from which all problems must get solutions that pass through sustainable actions. The other approach is instrumental and will seek to form the student in the areas of knowledge related to practices based on sustainability and enable her to know, develop and apply new or consolidated techniques related to the extraction, transformation and use of resources.
The Sustainability Graduate Program provides for the training of researchers, masters and PhD, with an interdisciplinary profile, for the academic and scientific systems and for acting in public and private organizations, to produce and / or apply knowledge about phenomena and processes and its relationships in the quest for the sustainability of the urban, rural, and natural ecosystems.
The proposal of the Sustainability Graduate Program is supported by two Research fields:
a) Science and Environmental Technology and;
B) Environmental Management.
These fields respond to the characteristics of consolidated projects and the studies that have been carried out by the teachers in their research groups since the beginning of the courses at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH).

Background
In 2004, the University of São Paulo submitted the project of a new unit to the Government of the State of São Paulo that was part of the plan to expand vacancies in public universities of the Council of Chancellors of the State Universities of São Paulo. The project suggested the implementation of a new unit in the vicinities of the Tietê Ecological Park, in the neighborhood of Ermelino Matarazzo.
The School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) graduate courses contemplate emerging fields of knowledge and careers considered promising in the 21st century, guided by interdisciplinary approaches and meeting socioeconomic requirements of the country in general and the labor market in particular.
The sustainability Graduate Program amalgamates teachers of the courses of Environmental Management, Natural Sciences, and Marketing. The interdisciplinary approach in the analyzed objects and action fields stands out in the faculty group. Teachers from other units of USP also participate in the program.
In addition to pursuing USP’s level of excellence in teaching and research, EACH’s guiding principle is the integration between university and community, through extension programs and encouragement of research on local problems. Another distinguishing feature of the School is the absence of departments, following the logic of promoting integration between courses, their teachers, research and extension projects, and optimizing resources through the space and equipment sharing.
Another innovative aspect within USP is that the unit has not had departments since its inception, which has resulted in innovation in encouraging the coexistence of teachers with different backgrounds and students with varied interests. As a consequence, initiatives have taken place to form research groups that bring together researchers from different areas of knowledge to develop innovative lines of research in the field of sustainability.
The School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) was, as of 2005, the newest academic unit of the University of São Paulo. It presents as mission innovation and academic excellence in teaching, research and extension, while maintaining the tradition of USP.

The University of São Paulo (USP) is a public university, maintained by the State of São Paulo and linked to the Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (SDECTI). Founded in 2005, the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH) offers eleven undergraduate courses, in addition to eleven graduate programs, which cover different areas of knowledge. EACH’s graduate programs aim to foster scientific production and social and technological innovation to meet the demands arising from the upward development of society.
EACH’s guiding principle is to promote strong interaction with communities in the east side. Along with cultural and sports activities, it proposes to develop several extension programs, such as improvement courses and research projects aimed at solving local problems, in addition to providing greater access to laboratory facilities in various areas, such as science, arts, computing, remote sensing and language teaching.
